Overview

The GIS Department at the SGS is responsible for the digital capture and attribution of all maps produced under SGS survey and exploration programs. The Department is well equipped with workstations running the latest ESRI ArcGIS 10 software. All new SGS printed maps are now produced by digital methods.

- Development of an integrated GIS data model and
database.
- Presenting different technical geoscience data as
geographical map data.
- Analyses of technical data.

Products

- Geological maps.
- Mineral locality maps.
- Administrative regions maps.
- City maps.
- 3D models.
- Spatial grids.
- Thematic analysis maps.
- Location maps of a variety of data (minerals, hazard, earthquakes, etc)

Development of an integrated GIS data model and database

This project is developing an integrated, relational data model and database for future management and delivery of GIS data by SGS. The data model will standardize the basic attribution and symbolization of point, line and area features on SGS maps. Links will be created to other attribute tables that describe a wide range of geological, environmental and resource properties.

SGS GIS web application:
This module provides the user with the basic map navigation.

Functionalities like Zoom In, Zoom Out, Full Extent, Pan, Identify, and Query.

Other functionalities of the module include adding a point to the base map and search capability. The user can toggle between layers and legend display.

Measurements: The function allows the user to measure distance and area in different units.

Search:

The function allows the user to search different site, for example, the cities, geological formations and mineralization sites.

Identification: This functionality allows the user to identify active layer information.

Query:

This function allows the user to make a query on the active layer selected and the result is displayed in a tabular format and the corresponding features are highlighted on the map.

The end product is uploaded to the incorporating GIS database to unify all SGS geoscience data and information within a single data management system.
